While on March 15th the FIFA backed the U-17 World Cup to be held in Peru, it seems that the tournament will not be able to take place in our country. The Peruvian government has chosen to prioritize the resources destined for this tournament in the national reconstruction, after the natural disasters that have occurred in recent weeks in our territory.

According to Radio Ovación, the board of directors of the Peruvian Football Federation (FPF) met this Tuesday and one of the topics they discussed was the World Cup tournament and the major problems they have had since its announcement for its organization.

Likewise, the situation became complicated since last year when the then President of the Republic, Pedro Castillo, reduced the budget (from 650 million soles to 350 million soles) for the organization of the World Cup, removing Chiclayo from the list of venues for purely political reasons.

The same source also indicates that the work for the stadiums in Tacna and Piura could not begin, after irregularities in the awarding of the contracts were found by the General Comptroller's Office. Therefore, the person in charge of the infrastructure called for new bidding processes to carry out the works; however, the engineers themselves, who were working on this project, stated that they would not meet the planned deadlines. They even confirmed that the only venues ready for the World Cup were the National Stadium and the Moquegua venue.

A complicated panorama

Unfortunately, these problems were compounded by the climatic factors, which seriously damaged some cities and towns in our country. Due to this, the situation took a radical turn and the government decided to prioritize the reconstruction of these areas rather than organizing a football event.

It should be noted that Peru would have been the host of the U-17 World Cup in 2021; however, it was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic, determining that it should take place in 2023. Despite this, it will not happen either. This would be the second World Cup of this category organized in our nation, after the one held in 2005.
