US Tennis Player Serena Williams wins 23rd Grand Slam Title
American tennis player Serena Williams won her 23rd Grand Slam title by defeating her sister Venus in two sets, with a double 6-4, in the Melbourne final of the Australian Open.
Serena, 35, now holds the solo record for the most major titles in the professional era, surpassing Steffi Graf (22), and closing in on the all-time record held by Australian Margaret Court (24), who was present in the presidential box at Rod Laver Arena, watching her successor come within reach of her record.
"It's crazy, I knew I had the opportunity to break the record, but I didn't want to talk about records, this helps me stay calm," said the winner.
Given how easily Serena has advanced in this year's Australian Open, it seems that reaching 24 majors is within reach this season. Her first major title was the 1999 US Open, nearly 18 years ago.
"I wouldn't have reached 23 titles without you. In fact, I wouldn't be anywhere. You're the one who motivates me, the only reason the Williams sisters exist. You've made an incredible comeback," Serena said about her sister during the trophy presentation, as Venus returns to the spotlight after many physical struggles.
"Serena Williams, this is my little sister guys. You've achieved something amazing, your victory has always been my victory. I think you know that I'm very proud of you," an emotional Venus said before.
With this victory, the younger Williams sister will reclaim the world number one ranking in the WTA after German Angelique Kerber, defending champion in Melbourne, was eliminated in the round of 16.
