The new Joker film directed by Todd Phillips has everything to be a great box office success, but the director knows that trying to compete with Marvel doesn't make sense.

Marvel Studios is positioned as one of the most successful studios in Hollywood. The films they have produced for the MCU always end up becoming box office hits, making it difficult for other films to perform well in theaters. The director of Joker is well aware of this reality, and although his film will become very popular, he is aware that trying to take the first place from Marvel is impossible.

The power of Marvel Studios can be seen in the astronomical amounts of money obtained this year. In 2019, Captain Marvel was released in theaters, a film that seemed destined to fail, however, it managed to earn $1.128 billion at the box office; then came Avengers: Endgame, the highly anticipated continuation of Avengers: Infinity War, this sequel made millions rush to theaters to buy tickets during the pre-sale and other surprising things, the film earned $2.796 billion, becoming the most successful film of Marvel Studios, surpassing Avatar; and in the summer, Spider-Man: Far From Home was released, the conclusion of the Infinity Saga, a film that promised a lot but in the end was just another one of the bunch, it earned $1.127 billion at the box office.

This 2019 was colossal for Marvel Studios and they are preparing for bigger things. The amounts gathered by their films represent an insurmountable challenge for other studios that want to compete with them. The marketing monster they have behind them and the numbers invested in projects are something that is beyond the reach of other companies.

These were the words of Phillips during a recent interview with Comicbook:

"You can't beat Marvel, they are an immense giant. Let's do something that they cannot do."

The director set out to make a film that is very different from the themes of Marvel Studios, a company that, due to its family-friendly policy, is not allowed to touch on too scandalous topics.
