Sofía Mulanovich is one step away from returning to glory
Sofía Mulánovich is one step away from returning to glory. The national surfer has just qualified for the final of the women's category of the 2019 ISA Surfing World Championships, held in Miyazaki, Japan. She has also secured a medal.
Sofía, in the semifinal, faced the Brazilians Silvana Lima and Tatiana Weston-Webb, and the South African Bianca Buitendag. Only two could advance to the grand final, and 'Sofi', thanks to her great performance, qualified in first place. Lima finished second.
The Peruvian surfer scored 13.87 on her two highest scoring waves, while Silvana scored 13.83. Now both await the two winners of the repechage, which will be contested between Tatiana Weston-Webb, Bianca Buitendag, Sally Fitzgibbons, and Carissa Moore.
If she wins, this would be the second time that Sofía Mulánovich lifts the ISA Surfing World Championship title. She already did it in 2004.
This event will grant spots for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, but not for the American continent, as the spots for this region were awarded at the Lima 2019 Pan American Games. However, national surfers can seek their qualification for the Japanese event in the 2019 ISA World Surfing Games.
