The 2023 season of the Liga 1 Betsson is coming to an end. Thanks to their good performance throughout the year, Alianza Lima earned the right to directly qualify for the final (by winning the Apertura Tournament and leading the Accumulated table), but they are waiting to find out who their opponent will be in the dispute for the national title for the third consecutive year. However, this last dilemma remains unanswered, as there is a possibility that semifinals may or may not be played based on the current scores. What is certain is the dates on which these matches will be played.
It has been revealed that if Universitario de Deportes or Sporting Cristal win the Clausura Tournament, they will automatically qualify for the final (the scenarios are detailed below). In this case, according to RPP, the first and second leg finals will be played on November 4th and 8th. However, the order of the stadiums where these matches will take place will depend on the teams. The only confirmed venue so far is the Alejandro Villanueva Stadium.
If, however, Melgar wins the second round title, then semifinals will be played, either against Universitario or Sporting Cristal (depending on the result they obtain in their last matches). If that happens, the proposed dates for the semifinal matches would be November 5th and 8th, while the first and second leg finals would be postponed until November 26th and December 3rd.
Will there be semifinals or not?
A question that has been raised is whether there will be semifinals or not, as certain results could lead to the omission of these matches and only have the final, in two-leg matches. What are these scenarios? Here we describe what would happen if any of the following clubs win the Clausura:
- If Universitario wins: they would finish in second place in the Accumulated table (with 73 points), just by winning the match against Sport Huancayo, so they would qualify, like Alianza Lima, for the final directly. The Regulations stipulate that the winners of the Apertura and Clausura, if they finish in first and second place (in any order), immediately advance to the final.
- If Melgar wins: they would still finish in fourth place in the Accumulated table (with 63 points), so they would have to face the team that finishes in second place in the Accumulated table, which could be Universitario (if they lose to 'Rojo Matador' and finish with 70 points) or Sporting Cristal (if they win their match against Alianza Atlético and reach 71 points).
- If Alianza Lima wins: they would automatically be crowned champions of the Liga 1 Betsson 2023, as they already have the Apertura and Clausura titles. However, for that to happen, Universitario and Melgar must first lose their respective matches against Sport Huancayo and Binacional, only then will the 'íntimos' be able to stay one point ahead of the 'cremas', as they currently have 36 points.
- If Sporting Cristal wins: they would finish in second place in the Accumulated table (with 71 points), just by winning the match against Alianza Atlético, so they would qualify -like Alianza Lima- for the final directly (same case for the 'cremas'). But this will only be possible if they win their last match with a score equal to or greater than 4-0, to get 36 points in the Clausura table and have a better goal difference.
