This Tuesday it was announced that Juan Reynoso was the new coach of the Peruvian National Team, replacing Ricardo Gareca. Surely, the younger ones remember him for his successes as a coach, however, years ago he was a reference of our football, although his period as a player of the 'Blanquirroja' did not end well.

The 'Cabezón' had been captain of the 'Bicolor' in the Qualifiers for France 1998, a process in which we missed the World Cup due to goal difference and the coach was Juan Carlos Oblitas.

After the Copa America 1999, it was decided to change the coach and the chosen one was Francisco Maturana, who had coached Colombia in the 1990 and 1994 World Cups. Reynoso continued wearing the captain's armband and the Peruvian National Team accepted an invitation to participate in the 2000 Gold Cup, organized by the United States.

Our national team reached the semifinals of the tournament organized by CONCACAF. Its next opponent would be Colombia. February 23 would be a fateful day for the Peruvian defense at a football level.

Marcial Salazar scored an own goal, while Reynoso failed in Colombia's second goal when he tried to pass it with his chest to Óscar Ibáñez but ended up giving it to Víctor Bonillo, the Colombian player who scored with the empty goal. Roberto Palacios scored a goal thanks to one of his usual 'Chorrigolazos'.

That match against the 'cafeteros' would be Reynoso's last. Maturana "erased" him and claimed that the then Cruz Azul player had made many mistakes in the last games and needed a more solid element. Nolberto Solano would keep the captain's armband.
