The Peruvian Football Federation (FPF) paid tribute this Tuesday to Óscar Tabárez, coach of Uruguay, who reached 200 matches in charge of the Celeste after facing the Blanquirroja for the second time in the October FIFA dates.
Antonio García Pye, manager of the national teams of the organization, presented a recognition to the experienced Uruguayan strategist after the match played in Lima, which ended in a 1-1 draw.
"I want to thank you for the kindness in the circumstances of the 200 matches, but with the awareness that it comes from a football that has its history and has aroused admiration in many moments of it," highlighted Tabárez while contemplating the Ayacucho altarpiece he received as a gift.
The contract between the 'Maestro' and the Uruguayan Football Association (AUF) was renewed in 2018 for four years, so he will lead his country's team in the qualifying process for Qatar 2022, after having led the Celeste, twice world champion (1930 - 1950), to four World Cups.
This school teacher turned football coach has as his motto "the journey is the reward," and he applies it every time he is asked about the difficulty of a match or a greater sporting challenge such as a World Cup.
For him, experience is the foundation on which success is built. Thus, when France, the eventual world champion in Russia 2018, eliminated Uruguay in the quarterfinals, one of his reflections based on this philosophy went around the world.
The defeat "does not mean that there has been a failure in the process of 12 years of bringing Uruguay back to the elite of world football (...) Today a dream has ended, but others will come and we must try to prepare for them," he declared at that time.
Although for Uruguayans it is a commonplace scene, outside their borders it is remarkable his effort to move around the fields due to a chronic neuropathy that sometimes requires him to use canes and other times a motorized cart. But he remains strong from the Uruguayan bench.
With his austere style, the coach has established values of collective improvement that for many in Uruguay are inspiring beyond the field of football.
Reserved in his responses, measured in his celebrations, strict in his programs, the 'Maestro' has become a role model who advocates for uses, patterns of behavior, and even promotes models of behavior.
Books about his life, his career, and his process, as they call his 13 years leading the Celeste, are numerous.
With his method under his arm, Tabárez has earned the respect of both his own and others. Now he continues to make history with the Celeste.
