After several months, the Peruvian National Team dropped to the 21st position in the FIFA ranking. Here are all the details of their new position after playing the first two rounds of the Qualifiers.

If one analyzes carefully the performance of the Peruvian National Team in the start of the Qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup in Canada, United States, and Mexico, one can feel satisfied. For example, they managed to get a draw in Ciudad del Este despite playing the second half with one man less (Luis Advíncula was sent off), and against Brazil the team showed – for large periods of the game – defensive organization in all its lines (in the end, Brazil won with a goal from Marquinhos). However, despite all this, the national team dropped in the FIFA rankings after getting only one point.

As a result, the team led by Juan Reynoso dropped from the 21st place to 22nd in the FIFA rankings, being surpassed by Iran, a team that won both of its international friendly matches in September (1-0 against Bulgaria and 4-0 against Angola).

It should be noted that in October, the Peruvian National Team will have the opportunity to recover points in this list, although they will have to overcome two very difficult obstacles to do so. The first one will be Chile, in Santiago, while the second challenge is against Argentina, the current leader of the international rankings. This match will be held at the Estadio Nacional.

Regarding the South American countries, Peru is in fifth place, being surpassed by Argentina, Brazil (3rd), Colombia (16th), and Uruguay (17th). Behind the national team, there are Chile (36th), Ecuador (38th), Paraguay (52nd), Venezuela (53rd), and Bolivia (83rd), respectively.

When are Peru's next matches?

After losing 0-1 against Brazil in the 2nd round of the South American Qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup in Canada, United States, and Mexico, the Peruvian National Team will have action again in the month of October (keep in mind that Juan Reynoso will announce his list of selected players on Friday, September 29). The first challenge will be an away match against Chile on October 12 at 7:00 pm (Peruvian time). The match will be played at the Estadio Monumental David Arellano.

A few days later, on October 17, the Peruvian National Team will host Argentina, the reigning world champion, at the Estadio Nacional. It will be a difficult match similar to the one we had against Brazil, in which points must be earned to stay close to the qualifying positions for the next World Cup.
