Loris Karius, famous for his erratic performance in the 2018 UEFA Champions League final with Liverpool against Real Madrid, started as the starting goalkeeper in the final of the Carabao Cup between 'his' Newcastle and Manchester United at the legendary Wembley Stadium. As expected, the German's return, 728 days later, has been highly anticipated in the match.
And it only took 10 seconds for Karius to have work against United. The former Liverpool goalkeeper had to grab a pass from his defense to stop United's danger. After twelve minutes, Loris intervened again against a direct shot from Dutchman Wout Weghorst.
Karius has been the only available option for Newcastle after Nick Pope was sent off this Saturday for a direct red card in the duel against Liverpool, while Martin Duvrabka, the second goalkeeper, could not play against United as he had already played in that competition with another team.
Since his infamous appearance in the final in Kiev, where he made two serious errors against Real Madrid, in Karim Benzema's 1-0 and Gareth Bale's 3-1, Karius went on loan to Turkish football, where he played two seasons at Besiktas, before going to Union Berlin, where he only played five matches.
In the summer of 2021, Karius returned to Liverpool, but did not make any appearances with the Anfield team before moving to Newcastle, the club with which he first signed until January 2023 and later until the end of the season.
