A Fresh Start. Newcastle announced the signing of Loris Karius on Monday to cover for the injury of Karl Darlow, the regular substitute of international Nick Pope. The German goalkeeper, who has been free since his contract with Liverpool ended in June, signed a contract until January, with the option to extend it until the end of the current season.
At 29 years old, the German was the first-choice goalkeeper chosen by Jürgen Klopp upon his arrival at Anfield, but he did not play for the 'Reds' since his disastrous performance in the 2018 Champions League final and the 3-1 defeat against Real Madrid, with two gross errors that cost his team two goals.
"Karius, a free agent since his departure from Liverpool in the summer, has reached an agreement until January with the option to extend his stay until the end of the season. The arrival of the German comes after an ankle injury suffered by Karl Darlow in a training session. While it is not expected that the player will be out for a long time, the Magpies have moved quickly to secure experienced coverage and add competition to the team," the official statement from the Magpies reads, published on their social media and website.
Loris Karius, who has been sidelined from Liverpool's first team, had a brief loan spell at Union Berlin a couple of seasons ago. Now he hopes to have more opportunities and return to his best level.
"I am excited. It's a good opportunity for me and a great project to be part of. It didn't take me long to make a decision. Newcastle has a great coach and plays really attractive football. I felt it was the right project for me and I am excited to work with the coaches and my new teammates," the goalkeeper declared in a conversation with the press department of his new club.
