After several months of preparation at the Legado Polideportivo 1, the Peruvian national team will travel to Argentina to compete in the world championship for short stature athletes, which will be held for the first time in history from November 6 to 12. In this way, our national representatives will mark a milestone in the sport of America, showcasing their abilities and talent.
In this context, the Legado Special Project bid farewell to the Peruvian athletes, giving them a sports jersey during the press conference held at the Lima 2019 Olympic House with the participation of the Legado executive director, Álvaro Castro, and the president of the Peruvian national team for short stature athletes, Fabián Chira.
“Our role as Legado was to provide all the sports infrastructure so that our athletes could prepare in the best way possible. In this way, we join efforts to give greater visibility to this sport,” said Álvaro Castro.
As part of the ceremony, the national representatives took part in an exhibition match, precisely on the same field where they trained daily, under the guidance of coach Fernando Luyo.
The Peruvian national team for short stature athletes was created in 2014. Since then, young talents from the provinces and the capital have joined the team, finding in football a tool for inclusion.
“Our participation in Argentina will mark the beginning of many World Cups to come. I am very happy because before people associated us with comedy programs and now they ask me if I am part of the Peruvian national team. We also have to be prepared as a country because we may possibly host the next World Cup,” added Fabián Chira.
About the World Cup
This will be the first World Cup to be organized in the history of dwarf football, and Argentina will host this unprecedented tournament that will bring together 16 countries: Brazil, Colombia, Bolivia, Mexico, Guatemala, Ecuador, Peru, Chile, Paraguay, Argentina, Spain, France, Morocco, Iraq, India, and the United States. It is a self-managed tournament, the result of the initiative of a group of players with achondroplasia, a bone growth disorder that affects one in every 10,000 births worldwide.
It is worth noting that Peru hosted the second edition of the Dwarf Copa America in 2022. In this tournament, Argentina was crowned champion at the Legado VIDENA Polideportivo 1.
