The idea of having a female Money in the Bank ladder match began to manifest weeks ago, and when it was confirmed on a pre-PPV episode of SmackDown that took place on Sunday, fans began to have expectations of what would be another feat of the women's revolution.
With more than satisfactory precedents like the first ever Hell in a Cell match featuring women, in that case Charlotte and Sasha Banks, the bar was set high but the confidence in the female wrestlers who were going to headline MITB was placed.
However, the match was heavily criticized by the fans (and rightfully so) since Carmella won the briefcase with the help of James Ellsworth, who climbed the ladder to do all the work and thus ruined the match.
One of the disappointed ones was WWE Hall of Famer Jerry "The King" Lawler, who criticized the women's match on his podcast "Dinner With The King":
"That was something that disturbed me, and I'm sure they will fix this somehow, that's what WWE is about. We no longer call them Divas, it's the women's division because it's about empowering women. All the emphasis that WWE has put on that division resulted in that."
"That's why I was disappointed to see that, in the first historic women's match for the Money in the Bank, a man climbed and got the briefcase."
