She ranked among the best. This Sunday, Kimberly García finished the 20-kilometer race walking in fourth place. It was for the 2023 World Athletics Championships , held in Budapest, Hungary. The Peruvian athlete -two-time world champion in the mentioned distance and also in the 35 km- completed the competition with a time of 01:27:32, which did not allow her to surpass her personal best mark or enter the podium of the contest.
The national athlete, 29 years old, led the race for much of the distance; but she could not maintain the pace in the last kilometers and finished very close to the podium. She was only six seconds away from the Italian Antonella Palmisano (01:27:26), who won the bronze medal in Budapest.
The silver medal went to the Australian Jemima Montag (01:27:16); while the gold medal went to the Spanish walker María Pérez, who crowned herself with a time of 01:26:51. It is worth noting that the Peruvian Mary Luz Andía also participated in the competition: she finished in 32nd place with a time of 01:35:38, her best time this season. On the other hand, the national athlete Evelyn Inga was disqualified.
This tough competition will allow Kimberly García to arrive in good condition for the challenges ahead. Her next challenge will be the women's 35-kilometer race walking, which is scheduled to take place on Thursday, August 24. Remember that the athlete will defend the gold she won in Eugene. Andía and Inga will also participate.
Kimberly García, a great support for her colleagues
Last Saturday, race walker César Rodríguez qualified for the 2024 Paris Olympics, after setting a national record in the 20 km race walking during the 2023 Budapest World Athletics Championships. The Peruvian crossed the finish line in 27th place and achieved a time of 1:19:52, 18 seconds less than the qualifying mark.
At the end of the competition, the athlete said that his inspiration is the Peruvian athlete Kimberly García. "Thank God the weather was good, it helped us a lot. The record we set is thanks to the work and perseverance we have had. Everyone's marks are improving, as Kimberly García, as world champion, motivated us a lot. We are all achieving better times," he commented.
