The standings of the CONMEBOL 2026 qualifiers became thrilling after the respective second matchday. The last match of this round was played in Lima and ended with a 1-0 victory for Brazil against Peru. Meanwhile, Argentina defeated Bolivia at high altitude, then Venezuela won by the minimum against Paraguay, and finally, Ecuador did the same against Uruguay.

How many South American teams qualify for the 2026 World Cup?

As it is known, the 2026 World Cup will be held in the United States, Mexico, and Canada, and it will have 48 participating teams. Six teams from the CONMEBOL will qualify directly, in addition to a playoff spot. This is how the spots for the next World Cup will be distributed.

  • CAF (Africa): Nine direct spots + one playoff spot
  • Concacaf (North America, Central America, and the Caribbean): Six direct spots (three hosts and three qualifiers from the Qualifiers) + 2 playoff spots
  • CONMEBOL (South America): Six direct spots + 1 playoff spot
  • OFC (Oceania): One direct spot + 1 playoff spot
  • UEFA (Europe): 16 direct spots

Why did Ecuador start with three fewer points?

The TAS determined that Ecuador would lose three points at the start of the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers due to Byron Castillo's improper registration. Although it could have been negative today, the arbitration award allowed the 'Tri' to compete in Qatar 2022 despite the protests from Chile and Peru.

When is the next matchday of the Qualifiers?

Matchday 3 of the Qualifiers will start on October 12, and Matchday 4 will take place just five days later, on the 17th of the same month. Remember that all teams will play between those dates.
