Before the Wimbledon premiere, Novak Djokovic insists on the idea of not getting vaccinated against the coronavirus. The Serbian knows that he can be excluded from the US Open.

Novak Djokovic was the protagonist of one of the most controversial cases of 2022. The Serbian did not get vaccinated against the coronavirus and, as a consequence, missed the Australian Open due to the restrictions of the Oceanic government. Months passed and the tennis player's position has not changed at all. In fact, the athlete already knows that he would also miss the US Open, the last Grand Slam of the season.

On the eve of his debut at Wimbledon (on Monday, June 27 against South Korean Soon-Woo Kwon), 'Nole' was asked at the press conference if he maintains his stance of not getting vaccinated. Djokovic responded with a laconic "Yes". Do you insist on that idea? a journalist insisted. "Yes," he replied again, for whom the tournament in England could be the last Grand Slam of the year.

Immediately, Novak went further with respect to the tournament in North America. "Today, considering the situation, I am not authorized to enter the United States. It is an additional motivation to play well here (at Wimbledon). I would like to go to the United States, but at the moment it is not possible. I can't do much. It really depends on the US government to accept or not to allow an unvaccinated person to enter their territory", he explained.

Last year, Djokovic won in Australia, Roland Garros, and Wimbledon, but failed in the United States. Although, overall, the Serbian became champion of the US Open in 2011, 2015, and 2018, and has won 20 Grand Slam titles, the same as Roger Federer, but two behind Rafael Nadal, who has already won the Australian Open and Roland Garros this season.

No points on grass

In Wimbledon, he will not earn any points, as the ATP will not distribute points for the world ranking as a protest against the decision of the London tournament to exclude Russian and Belarusian players because of the war in Ukraine. "I understand the frustration of the Ukrainian people towards Russia and what is happening. As a child of war, I know what it feels like. Anyway, I do not agree with banning Russian players from competing", Djokovic said.

Because of that communication, the Serbian will lose 2,000 points in a couple of weeks, and it will be reflected in the ATP ranking: he will drop from the third position to the seventh, his worst ranking in years. However, 'Nole' said that "Now I don't pursue the ranking as much as I did before breaking the record for the most weeks as number one. It is no longer a priority for me. I understand that others will be more affected by the issue. Although, logically, I am aware that this year I did not have the opportunity to defend 4,000 points".
