The team led by Ricardo Gareca secured the fifth place in the Qatar 2022 World Cup Qualifiers after defeating Paraguay 2-0 at the National Stadium. Gianluca Lapadula opened the scoring a few minutes into the match and Yoshimar Yotún added the second goal towards the end of the first half. In response to 'Yoshi's' goal, Colombia stated that the Colombian national team was "out of options" while the match was still ongoing.

After a cross from Edison Flores, the midfielder from Sporting Cristal scored an astonishing scissor kick goal, creating a frenzy at the National Stadium and securing a 2-0 victory for Peru.
