MEXICO -- Despite Mexico's elimination in the round of 16, players from Liga MX advanced to the "fifth match". There were two players, both from the Uruguayan national team and Monterrey, who made it to the quarterfinals of Russia 2018.
Midfielder Carlos Sanchez and forward Jonathan Urretaviscaya are part of coach Oscar Washington Tabarez's squad, which will face France in the prelude to the semifinals.

Urretaviscaya, who received his first call-up to the national team during the qualifying process for Russia 2018, has yet to see action in both the group stage and the match against Portugal. On the other hand, Carlos Sanchez has played in three matches and has assisted his teammates on two occasions. However, he has not completed the full 90 minutes in any match and only started in the game against Saudi Arabia.
Liga MX contributed a total of 22 players, despite the fact that the majority of Mexican national team players play abroad, 8 of them came from the local league. Peru was the next team with the most Mexican football players with 7, followed by Colombia and Uruguay with a couple of players each, and Japan, Panama, and Argentina with one player respectively.
Although Argentina, Japan, Mexico, Uruguay, and Colombia advanced to the round of 16, only Uruguay managed to overcome this stage.
