Mexican wrestler Alfonso Leyva eliminated in his first bout
The Jalisco native Alfonso Leyva was eliminated in his first bout in Greco-Roman wrestling against Roberti Kobliashvili in the 85-kilogram category.
The Mexican lost by a score of 5-0 after a good first round, where they went without points but had already received a warning for passivity. In the second round, the referee signaled a second position of Par Terre (To the ground) and the first point in favor of the European wrestler.
Followed by a takedown that put the score at 3-0, the outlook looked very difficult for the wrestler from Guadalajara, who had to score points in the last minutes without success.
"The first period was very good, but in the second, they took some points from me that shouldn't have happened. I made a mistake when I was losing 3-0; I knew the next passivity was for him and I was going to have to work from the bottom, but he pulled me forward and I went face-first, I didn't expect it. I'm not going to stay like this, and the next Olympic cycle must be very good for me," he shared after his bout.
Leyva denied feeling nervous about the big stage of the Olympic Games, "It was a mistake, warning and point, and the next one was for him, and I would have tied, but he executed that move very well, he pulled me to one side, I already knew he was going to do that but he succeeded," he added.
In Greco-Roman wrestling, there is a repechage system, so if Kobliashvili reaches the final, it would take the Mexican to compete for the bronze medal. If his opponent loses, he will be eliminated.
