GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) - This weekend marks a bittersweet final lap in the Green Bay area. After 25 years, the Cellcom Green Bay Marathon holds its last race.
Staff and volunteers are currently preparing for the runners some are picking up their race packets already. The route will begin at Mike McCarthy Way near the stadium and ends on Holmgren Way and Oneida Street.
The race kicks off at 7 a.m. this Sunday with staggered starts for the full marathon, half marathon, and 5K events. As we reported last month, the CEO of Cellcom said the company felt it was time to look for new initiatives to benefit the community, and the decision to end the event was not based on finances.
“There’s a lot of bittersweet emotions for runners, sponsors, spectators alike, it’s been a big deal in Green Bay for 25 years. So, a tradition for a lot of people,” said Tammy Vandenbusch, spokesperson for Cellcom Green Bay Marathon.
Packet pickup continues Friday night until 7 p.m. and continues all day Saturday at the Bar on Holmgren Way.
