Jacksonville State quarterback Logan Smothers named Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week
Jacksonville State quarterback Logan Smothers has been named Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
Smothers, a junior from Muscle Shoals, accounted for four touchdowns in the Gamecocks' 35-28 overtime win at Sam Houston last Thursday. Smothers passed for 197 yards and three touchdowns and also ran for a score as Jax State (4-1, 2-0 CUSA) rallied from 21-7 down at halftime and 28-20 with little more than a minute remaining.
Making his third start since transferring to JSU from Nebraska, Smothers led the Gamecocks on an 8-play, 75-yard drive to tie the game with 13 seconds left on a 28-yard touchdown pass to Perry Carter and a two-point pass to Quinton Lane. He then threw 24 yards to Sean Brown in overtime for the game-winning score.
Jax State stays on the road this week, traveling to Middle Tennessee on Wednesday. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. in a game to be televised by ESPNU.
