US Citizenship: how much does it cost and how to process the Form N-400

Prices are rising. The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) plans to increase the fee for the citizenship process, as these costs would increase up to 19%, however, in other cases it can be more affordable for certain immigrants, as that is the proposal of the office of Citizenship and Immigration Services.

It should be mentioned that, if the proposed plan that has been exposed in the Federal Register is carried out, the price for obtaining United States citizenship would increase from costing $640 to $760 without including biometric services. However, the cost of the application including biometric services would be $760, an increase of 6% or $35 from the current price.

Therefore, the office of Citizenship and Immigration Services indicates that; "the proposed rule would increase some fees, including a modest increase in the fee for certain naturalization applications".

It should be mentioned that eligibility for fee waivers for vulnerable populations and low-income individuals would be maintained, as well as for new fee waivers for humanitarian programs. "If finalized, the proposed rule would decrease or minimally increase fees for over a million low-income taxpayers each year", the agency communicates.

Reduced fee

The Office of Citizenship and Immigration Services suggests that this "reduced fee" for the citizenship process would decrease from costing $405 to $380, this would include the biometric service and ultimately cost up to 6% less.

It is said that the fee adjustment will allow USCIS to improve customer service operations, as well as address the workload of the current fiscal year, without neglecting "humanitarian" benefits for certain immigrants.
