The Prime Minister's position on transgender athletes in the UK

The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom has given his stance on the denial of transgender cyclist Emily Bridges to participate in the British championships.

The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Boris Johnson, said that transgender women should not be allowed to compete in women's sports.

"I don't believe biological men should compete in women's events. It may be a controversial opinion, but it's what makes sense to me," Johnson said to the media during a hospital visit.

"I also believe that women should have spaces, whether it's in hospitals, prisons, or changing rooms, dedicated solely to women. If this puts me in conflict with someone, we will have to work on it. This does not mean that I do not support people who want to change their gender. It is vital that we give these people the utmost love and support," added the Prime Minister.

These statements come after transgender cyclist Emily Bridges was denied participation in the British national championships this weekend, where she would have been able to compete, among other stars, with five-time Olympic champion Laura Kenny.

The British Cycling Federation reported that the International Cycling Union (UCI) suspended her participation because these championships distribute points for the international ranking and, in order to compete in the event, she needs permission to participate in international competitions as well, which is currently in process.
