The 2019 Venice International Film Festival has concluded and this year's edition has announced its winners. The Golden Lion, the main award for best film at the festival, went to "Joker", by Todd Phillips. The filmmaker collected the award along with Joaquin Phoenix, who delivers an extraordinary performance as the famous villain in the film.
It is the first time that a film about a character from superhero comics has received the most important recognition from one of the most prestigious festivals in the world. Although "Joker" has little to do with most of these movies: it is the dark portrait of how aspiring comedian Arthur Fleck, raised by his mother to "bring laughter and joy to the world," gradually becomes a ruthless killer.
The jury thus applauds one of the most acclaimed films by critics during the festival, and places it in a notable springboard for the Oscars.
