Spain is shocked by terrible news. The athlete Eloi Palau, Bike Trial champion, was seriously injured last Monday when a bomb from World War I exploded in the Presena Glacier in Italy. Apparently, he and a companion were trying to remove the artifact from the snow.
"The 21-year-old Bike Trial champion, Eloi Palau, was seriously injured last Monday when a World War I bomb accidentally exploded in the Italian Presena Glacier in the Dolomites. Palau and another young man who was with him were hit by the impact of the artifact when, apparently, they were removing it from the snow," reported the Spanish portal Mundo Deportivo.
According to the Spanish portal Mundo Deportivo, Palau was in the Trentino region of Italy and had seen the artifact, which would be a relic of the area that, a century ago, was a battlefield of World War I and was bombed by the Italian artillery. Unfortunately, the thaw in the area would have brought the explosive device to the surface.
Currently, the Catalan athlete is hospitalized in a hospital in Trento, "where he is receiving care for various injuries to his upper limbs and vision," according to Mundo Deportivo.
Palau, one of the rising stars in Bike Trial, had finished his participation in the World Championship held in that city, ranking 12th. Unfortunately, his health condition is now reserved, and he is receiving support on social media.
