Marvel fans received some bad and incredible news recently when rumors spread about Disney and Sony breaking up with the Spider-Man license. Now, the same companies have finally confirmed that they have been unable to reach an agreement, so Spider-Man has now been separated from the MCU.
Kevin Feige and Tom Holland spoke about this fact at the recent D23 Expo 2019. The actor who brings the arachnid to life commented that Spider-Man would take a different path in the future, but they would find a way to make his journey more impressive for the fans.
The president of Marvel Studios said he knew it was finite the time they were going to have the opportunity to have Spider-Man, so he thanked them for being able to release five films for the MCU with him, telling the story they wanted, and that he would always be grateful for it.
However, there is one more affected character that has not been considered in this entire Disney and Sony problem. What will happen to director Jon Watts, the same one who directed the previous two Spider-Man films for Marvel Studios?
Official information does not contractually link Jon Watts with Sony, but rumors indicate that both they and Marvel Studios want to sign the director for their own projects. Considering the filming dates and Sony's future plan, the third part of Spider-Man should be starting its production.
In fact, some sources from Deadline have reported that Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, the two screenwriters of the previous Spider-Man films, have already started writing the next Peter Parker film.
It is not known how the sequel to Spider-Man would change its story to remove the elements of the MCU now that Marvel and Sony have distanced themselves, but it is possible that Jon Watts will return to the production company to continue his legacy with Tom Holland, although everything will depend on the offer that Marvel Studios proposes to him and his own decision.
