Swiss Stan Wawrinka loses at Wimbledon
The fifth seed Swiss player Stan Wawrinka lost all his chances to become the new world number one at Wimbledon as he fell in the first round against the 52nd-ranked Russian Daniil Medvedev, a 21-year-old, by 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, and 6-1.
The Swiss player, three-time Grand Slam winner, was hampered by a left knee injury and conceded in two hours and 13 minutes. Last year he was beaten by the Argentine Juan Martin del Potro in the second round.
This Monday's defeat is the sixth time he has fallen in the first round in the All England Club.
With this loss, Wawrinka is ruled out to dethrone the British Andy Murray as the world number one.
The Swiss player was one of the three players, along with the Spaniard Rafael Nadal and the Serbian Novak Djokovic, who had a chance at the beginning to do so. In his case, he needed to win the title, the only one missing in his Grand Slam collection.
