Maria Sharapova isn’t putting a timeframe on when she and fiancé Alexander Gilkes will tie the knot.
Speaking to People in a new interview published Wednesday, the five-time Grand Slam winner — who announced her engagement to British businessman Gilkes in December 2020 — said the couple is “not in a rush” to wed and is enjoying this time together with their son, Theodore, who turns 2 next month.
“We were going to have a big wedding and then I got pregnant, and so we haven’t actually scheduled a new wedding yet,” Sharapova, 37, said. “Perhaps in the next couple of years.”
First linked in 2018, Sharapova revealed her engagement to Gilkes, 44, two years later.
“I said yes from the first day we met❤️This was our little secret, wasn’t it,” she wrote on Instagram at the time.
On her 35th birthday in April 2022, Sharapova confirmed the couple was expecting. They announced Theodore’s arrival three months later.
“The most beautiful, challenging, and rewarding gift our little family could ask for,” she gushed in July 2022.
With Theodore growing up and Gilkes’ professional portfolio expanding, Sharapova added to People “there’s just so much going on right now” to even factor in planning the nuptials.
“We’re just so excited about Theo, and Alexander also just launched his company recently. So in between work and parenting, there’s just so much going on right now,” she said.
Sharapova is savoring this special stage in her life after retiring from tennis in 2020.
“I don’t know if any woman ever knows when it’s time to step into a new phase or motherhood, but I feel like I made the choice at the right time,” the former world No. 1 told People.
“I feel like I have a healthy distance from tennis. I was ready for a new chapter in life.”
