Juan Pablo Varillas: Why did he withdraw from the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games?

The first Peruvian racket is in Belgium to compete in the ATP of Antwerp starting Monday, October 16, and then will compete in the ATP qualifying in Vienna, Austria, which is why he will not participate in the Pan American Games Santiago 2023.

After completing that tour, Juan Pablo Varillas traveled to Belgium to prepare for the ATP 250 in Antwerp, where he entered the main draw. And although rumors indicated that he was going to be part of the Peruvian delegation in the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games, which begin on October 20, 'Juanpi' issued a statement on his social networks revealing his decision. "Representing my country has been a great responsibility and honor for me. I always tried to do it in the best possible way, achieving incredible dreams and goals. This time, by my own decision and together with my team, we have decided to focus on my personal career and therefore not participate in the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games. It has been a difficult decision to make, and I take this opportunity to confirm my commitment to representing Peru in future competitions. I will be cheering on the Peruvian tennis team that will represent us and also all the other athletes who will go on behalf of our country," he said.

In fact, Varillas made this decision to continue competing because he defends 185 points in the ATP circuit from now until the end of the year. In fact, he currently ranks 65th and his goal is to stay in that range in order to directly enter the 2024 Australian Open, which will be the first Grand Slam of the next season. After the ATP 250 in Antwerp, Varillas is registered in the qualifying stage of the ATP 500 in Vienna (Austria) in the week of October 23, and the Masters 1000 in Paris starting on October 30. Afterwards, he can register for the ATP 250 in Metz (France) or Tel Aviv (due to the situation, it will not be played in Israel and will move to Sofia, Bulgaria), and then the Challenger 75 in Lima, which will be the second tournament of this category to be played this year in the country (in the first one, held in August at the Jockey Club, the Ecuadorian Álvaro Guillén Meza was the champion).
