Pablo Carreno Busta has looked shaky in the last few weeks and will play a Sebastian Baez that just posted his first win in a while. Will Carreno Busta survive? Who will prevail in this first-round meeting at the Basel Open?
Pablo Carreno Busta was beaten in the quarterfinals of the Napoli Cup this past week by Miomir Kecmanovic. It was his fourth defeat in six matches and it is becoming a worrying trend for the Spaniard who hasn’t won back-to-back matches since the start of the US Open last month. His slim hopes for Turin are pretty much over and this will be just his third match at the Basel Open, having previously made the Round of 16 in his only visit back in 2016. Busta is currently five spots down from making a top 10 return.
Sebastian Baez is on a dismal run of form although he did score his first win in three months last week when he upset Lorenzo Sonego in Napoli. Since his runner-up finish in Bastad, things have gone awry for the Argentine. Injuries and confidence issues have severely hampered his progress. Unless there is quick upturn in form in the last two tournaments, beginning with the Basel Open, then he could exit the top 40.
Pablo Carreno Busta leads the head-to-head over Sebastian Baez 1-0. That meeting was contested on the clay of Monte Carlo in the first half of the season. Baez holds a modest record indoors and hasn’t played a lot on this surface in his career. Busta is pushing closer to a top 10 finish and a great run at the Basel Open could boost his chances in that regard. I fully expect the Spaniard to control things. He does have a more solid game and surface advantage cannot be ignored.
