In his journey in Switzerland, Juan Pablo Varillas achieves one more victory. The Peruvian tennis player defeated Lorenzo Sonego, who is ranked 60th in the ATP, in two decisive sets in the round of 16 at the ATP 250 "EFG Swiss Open Gstaad".
Varillas, who was ranked 115th before the match, defeated the Italian player in two sets. In the first set, he won a tough match by 7-6(5), however, the Peruvian comfortably positioned himself in the second set and won by 6-2.
The match lasted one hour and 52 minutes. Now, Varillas will continue his fight to climb in the ATP ranking - where he managed to move up four positions to 111th - and in the tournament organized in Switzerland. Next, he will face Spanish player Roberto Bautista Agut, who is currently ranked 19th in the ATP.
It is worth mentioning that Varillas secured his spot in the main draw of the ATP 250 Gstaad on Monday, in Switzerland, after winning the last qualifying round. The national tennis player defeated Russian Pavel Kotov (ATP: 117) by 2-0, with sets of 6-4 and 6-1, in approximately one hour and 40 minutes.
The other matches that will be played in the round of 16 are Gasquet vs. Berrettini, Dominic Thiem vs. Delbonis, Jaume Munar vs. Alexander Ritschard, Casper Rudd vs. Jiri Lehecka, Perdro Martínez vs. Elías Ymer. In the case of Yannick Hanfmann and Ramos-Vinolas, they will have to wait for the matches between Nicolás Jarry vs. Monteiro and Huesler vs. Dominic Stricker to be defined.
