Promises of Transparency for Paris 2024 Olympic Games

The leaders of the Paris-2024 candidacy promised on Sunday "transparent" Olympic Games, following the recent corruption scandal related to the awarding of the Rio-2016 games. Their nomination will be officialized in Lima in a few days.

In the Peruvian capital on Wednesday, the International Olympic Committee will confirm the organization of the 2024 games in Paris and the 2028 edition in Los Angeles.

The meeting in Lima comes a few days after the IOC became involved in another corruption scandal. Brazilian authorities stated on Tuesday that the president of the Brazilian Olympic Committee, Carlos Nuzman, was the point of connection in a scheme that allegedly bought votes to secure Rio as the host of the 2016 games.

The Brazilian prosecutor's office claimed that Nuzman, who has been heading the COB since 1995 and is an honorary member of the IOC, played a key role in the payment of two million dollars in bribes.

"We want to emphasize that from day one, we have the responsibility to be as transparent as possible," explained Tony Estanguet, co-president of the Paris-2024 candidacy.

The mayor of the French capital, Anne Hidalgo, also wanted to highlight this matter.

"In our cities, when you use public funds, you must explain how you use them," she said.

"Transparency is very important. I am not an athlete, I am a politician, and we need to have trust with our citizens. In our team, transparency has been very strong and will continue to be so in the future, of course."
