Some athletes who won medals at the Rio Olympics have had to return them
According to the French media Le Figaro, the medals were sent to the Casa da Moeda to be restored or replaced, as they were rusty. However, the president of the organizing committee of this event, Mario Andrada, stated that it is a "coating problem, sometimes due to temperature differences", and that this was also due to the recycled materials used to make these medals.
The most affected by this deterioration are the silver medal winners.
Despite this, Mario Andrada stated that "a third of the medals have already been sent back to Europe to be returned to their owners. Another third will be returned in a few days, and all the medals will be returned in three or four weeks", said Mario Andrada.
