No charges will be filed against tennis player Venus Williams or the other driver involved in a June accident that killed a man, Florida police said Wednesday.

A report from Palm Beach Gardens police said an unidentified third vehicle cut off Williams as she tried to cross a busy six-lane highway near her home, triggering a series of events that ended with Linda Barson, 68, crashing into the side of Williams' passenger vehicle.

Barson's 78-year-old husband Jerome died 13 days after the June 9th crash, and she suffered a broken arm and other injuries Williams, 38, was not injured. Jerome Barson's family filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Williams seeking unspecified damages.

Lead investigator David Dowling said in his report that video from a nearby security camera showed Williams legally entered the intersection from her gated community's driveway, driving at a green light. As she started across, a dark-colored sedan cut her off, forcing her to stop. When the sedan cleared, Williams began moving forward in her 2010 Toyota Sequoia, putting her in the path of the Barsons, who by then had the green light. The Barsons' 2016 Hyundai Accent collided with Williams' SUV at 40 mph.

In his report, Dowling said state law required Williams to exit the intersection and, even if Linda Barson had the green light, she was obligated to make sure the intersection was clear.

The Barsons' attorney, Michael Steinger, said Dowling's findings are incorrect and the lawsuit will proceed.

"Miss Williams violated our client's right of way, which had a green light, as stated in every police report issued to date," Steinger said in a statement. "The report is inaccurately stated as the video surveillance does not indicate the traffic light for Miss Williams and therefore doesn't support the police conclusion".
