The British Daniel Evans, 50th player in the ATP ranking, announced on Friday that in April he tested positive for cocaine in an antidoping control, explaining that the consumption occurred outside of competition and for reasons "completely unrelated to tennis."

Evans, 27 years old, tested positive in the Barcelona tournament and the International Tennis Federation (ITF) announced that he will be suspended starting June 26 "pending the study of his case."

"It's a very difficult day for me and I wanted to come here to announce it in person, face to face," said Evans reading a statement, after which he did not accept questions.

"I made a mistake and I have to pay the consequences. I have no reason, not for a second, to justify that what I did was acceptable. I apologize to everyone I have hurt, my family, my coach, my team, my sponsors, the British Federation, and my fans," added the British tennis player, who has been a professional since 2006.

In 2007, Martina Hingis from Switzerland tested positive for cocaine at Wimbledon and was suspended for two years by the ITF.

In 2009, French tennis player Richard Gasquet also tested positive for cocaine. In that case, the ITF tribunal reduced his punishment to a little over two months after accepting that the substance use had been involuntary. Gasquet explained then that he had been "contaminated" by a young woman's kiss in a Miami nightclub.
