More than 70,000 Mexicans gathered today in El Zócalo - as the Plaza de la Constitución is popularly known - to cheer on their team's goals, as they defeated South Korea 2-1 in Russia 2018.

"People were skeptical with Germany and we won, today it was certain that it would be filled, from here to the Angel of Independence," said Roberto Martínez, one of the fans gathered early on in the capital's square.

Mexico's good performance in Russia has increased faith among fans who imagine the national team going beyond the quarter-finals. "The team is capable of doing it," Martínez predicted.

"We are going to be champions", said Mauricio, who did not miss the opportunity to experience this celebration after missing the match against the world champions.

Unlike Mexico's opening match, led by Colombian coach Juan Carlos Osorio, when skepticism prevailed among Mexican fans, this Saturday people gathered at El Zócalo hours before kick-off.

Last Sunday, the fans did not massively support their team, and the crowd barely filled half of El Zócalo. Today, it was packed and the public kept arriving after Carlos Vela's penalty goal.

The chants of "Mexico, Mexico!" were not lacking, especially after Javier 'Chicharito' Hernández's second goal.

By defeating Korea today, the Mexican team increased its chances of advancing to the round of 16 of the World Cup and the fans are already making plans to leave work on Thursday morning, if necessary, and watch the match against Sweden. (With information from EFE)
