Urban Meyer described Taulia Tagovailoa and Mike Locksley as a perfect marriage on the latest edition of Urban Analysis.
Tagovailoa and Maryland are 5-0 with Ohio State up next on the schedule. Meyer explained what has led to that great start for the Terps.
One of the parts of the marriage involves Locksley and the system he has in place for the Terps’ gunslinger. Meyer explained how Locksley has a history of building systems around specific players.
Tagovailoa’s skillset benefits from the system, which can be credited to Locksley.
“Taulia is in the perfect system. I’ve always had great respect for Mike Locksley. There’s guys who are just junkies about football, and he is,” Meyer said. “He understands that spread offense. I just think he has a great history of taking a player and building the system around the player.”
Two truths:
1. Taulia Tagovailoa is talented.
2. @TerpsFootball has a terrific offensive staff.@CoachUrbanMeyer explains how a strong QB-coach marriage has fueled 5-0 Maryland on the latest ???????????????????? ????????????????????????????????. ⤵️ pic.twitter.com/lnyXlboSlA— Big Ten Football (@B1Gfootball) October 6, 2023
There are other components to the marriage at Maryland. Locksley plays a big role, but the supporting staff around him are worth mentioning. The coaching staff at Maryland features experienced people like former Michigan offensive coordinator Josh Gattis and longtime Texas A&M head coach Kevin Sumlin.
“The interesting dynamic at Maryland, Coach Locksley’s surrounded himself with some pretty high-powered coaches,” Meyer said. “You’ve got Josh Gattis, who was the Wolverines’ offensive coordinator. He’s got Kevin Sumlin, who I’ve known for 30 years. Excellent coach. Real interesting dynamic.”
Tagovailoa and Locksley are a great fit for one another.
