November 2023 Holidays and Non-working Days Calendar
Holidays are festive days determined by law. Both public and private sector workers stop working and have free time to plan short family trips. Below are the November 2023 holidays:
- Wednesday, November 1st: All Saints' Day
What is celebrated on November 1st in Peru?
Officially and traditionally, All Saints' Day is celebrated on the first day of the eleventh month of the year, 24 hours after Halloween. Its roots date back to the 4th century, when the memory of the martyrs began to be honored.
November 1st was designated as All Saints' Day because it coincided with the pagan festivity of "Samhain" or Celtic New Year, which we now know as Halloween or Night of the Witches, celebrated on the night of October 31st.
The Church aimed to eradicate pagan festivities from the calendar, and this date was established during the pontificate of Pope Gregory III, who led the Catholic Church between 731 and 741. It was he who started this tradition by consecrating a chapel in honor of all saints in the Basilica of St. Peter. In Peru, due to its Catholic tradition, the holiday was adopted.
