So many times Alexi Gómez, the football player who could never be [OPINION]

The 'Hyena' had the talent and opportunity to be what he always wanted in football, but he had a career wrapped in scandal and indiscipline that today is taking its toll on him again.

His situation seems scandalous, but it's not. It's become a custom that his name is associated with indiscipline or legal troubles. Soccer doesn't forgive and punishes those who make bad decisions. Alexi Gomez knows this because he has repeatedly traveled down that stormy path, writing his own story in the entertainment pages and wasting the talent that still remains in his left foot. He is no longer the 20-year-old youth who rose to fame in the 2013 U-20 South American Championship and came close to taking us to the World Cup, now he is an adult trying to reinvent himself but his past won't let him.

It seems that Gomez is a rejected player, one whose talent could not be exploited when he had the opportunity. He was one of the promises of Peruvian soccer in his category, he was part of the most promising generation of footballers a decade ago and was part of the last national title of Universitario de Deportes in Peru. But today he is just a bad memory in soccer and a lament for those who saw in him a different player. In other words, a jewel that wasn't fully polished or another member of that list that no one wants to be part of.

The 'Hiena' was able to play in Sweden, Chile, Mexico, the United States, and Argentina; but he wasn't able to establish himself anywhere. Not even here, where Melgar and Alianza Lima gave him the opportunity to use them as a springboard to relaunch his turbulent career, but without success. Néstor Lorenzo, the current coach of Colombia, never let him play and sent him to the 'Dominó' Reserves last year; while with Alianza he was part of that disastrous squad of 2020 that was relegated and then restored by the TAS.

Furthermore, Gomez was part of the universe of players in Ricardo Gareca's first stage in the national team and he only played one game with him. The 'Tigre' had him come on in the friendly match in June 2017 against Paraguay (1-0 in favor of Peru) and then called him up for the last double round of the World Cup Qualifiers for Russia 2018 against Argentina and Colombia. The 'Hiena' appeared on the bench against Lionel Messi's team at La Bombonera, but then disappeared from the national team's map. And now, when he was trying to feel like a footballer again, his legal troubles hit him again, but this time with no turning back.
