Although at the time he was one of the most criticized players by the fans of Universitario de Deportes, the truth is that Martín Pérez Guedes has become one of the irreplaceable players in Jorge Fossati's scheme. The Argentine midfielder has earned his place and in the 'merengue' team they have considered him an essential element in the long term. Therefore, according to Liga 1 MAX's information, he has already started the process of becoming a naturalized citizen.
At 'U', they not only want to strengthen the sports project under Fossati, but also around the players who are important to him. Thus, although Pérez Guedes will not become Peruvian overnight, they want this to be resolved in 2023 and reach a better agreement when it comes to extending his contract, as he would no longer occupy a foreign player spot.
As for his records playing at Universitario, the former midfielder of Melgar has already played 18 games so far this season - including this Sunday's match against Alianza Atlético in Sullana - of which 14 were for the Liga 1 and 4 were for the Copa Sudamericana. He has scored two goals in total and has been one of the strong points since Fossati took charge of the team.
Universitario vs. Alianza Atlético: what's to come
After this rescheduled match from Matchday 2 of the Torneo Apertura, Universitario will play again next week when they host Universidad César Vallejo for the sixteenth round. This match is scheduled for Friday, May 19th at 8:30 p.m. and will be played at the Monumental stadium, located in the district of Ate.
The championship has entered its most 'spicy' stage and the 'cremas' know it, as with Alianza Lima in the lead they have no margin for error if they want to compete until the end. Therefore, knowing that they will face one of the most difficult opponents, Jorge Fossati will seek to take the three points against the Trujillanos. If this happens, they will continue to put pressure on the 'blanquiazules'.
Alianza Atlético, on the other hand, wants to leave behind their irregular path and they will have to do it outside of Sullana: they will visit Deportivo Garcilaso on Saturday, May 20th at 6:00 p.m. at the Inca Garcilaso de la Vega stadium (Cusco). Of the seven away matches they have played in the Liga 1 so far, they have one win, two draws, and four losses.
