Sporting Cristal announces Tiago Nunes as their first signing for the 2023 season
The Brazilian, who won the 2018 Copa Sudamericana, will be the new coach, replacing Roberto Mosquera. He will have the mission of fighting for the Liga 1 title and qualifying for the group stage of the Copa Libertadores.
The arrival of the coach represents an interesting bet for the local championship, more accustomed to serving as a springboard for future winners of international tournaments than as a destination for those who have already tasted international glory.
Nunes will be part of a small list that can be counted on one hand. Some of these cases were very successful, but others can clearly be classified as failures. We will have to wait and see which of these two groups the new DT from Sporting Cristal belongs to.

Roberto Scarone
The Uruguayan is one of the most remembered coaches by the fans of Universitario. Although he had already won the Peruvian league with Centro Iqueño in 1957, he returned to our country as a two-time champion of the Libertadores with Peñarol (1960 and 1961, the first two editions of the tournament). With Universitario, he managed to win three titles: 1969, 1971, and 1982.

Roque Máspoli
The Uruguayan, winner of the 1950 World Cup with his national team and the 1966 Libertadores with Peñarol, arrived in Peru in 1973 to coach Defensor Lima, with which he became champion that year. In 1977, he returned to take charge of Cristal, which finished as runner-up.
Pedro Dellacha
Despite his two consecrations in the Libertadores with Independiente de Avellaneda (1972 and 1975), the Argentine did not do well when Alianza Lima hired him for the 1992 season, as he only lasted four matches in charge, drawing three and losing one.

Paulo Autuori
The man who defeated Sporting Cristal with Cruzeiro in the 1997 Libertadores arrived in 2001 as the coach of Alianza Lima and managed to win the Apertura before leaving mid-year. In 2022, he returned to coach Sporting Cristal, who became national champions that season. However, it was a different story for the Brazilian with the Peruvian national team.
Luis Cubilla
Twice champion of the Libertadores with Olimpia (1979 and 1990), the Uruguayan was a surprise when he was announced as the coach of CNI in 2009. His performance was terrible, as he lost all six matches he coached.

Miguel Ángel Russo
'Miguelito' did not have much success after winning the 2007 Libertadores with Boca Juniors when he took over as the coach of Alianza Lima in 2019. With only three wins, four draws, and eight losses, the Argentine rescinded his contract after just a few months.

Rubén Darío Insúa
The first champion of the Copa Sudamericana (with San Lorenzo in 2002) had two experiences in Peru. In 2005, he was with Alianza Lima, but only for the first half of the year, during which he coached 17 matches (four wins, eight draws, and five losses). His time with Binacional in 2021 was even shorter, as he only managed three games, drawing one and losing two.
