Alexi Gómez, now 29 years old, was once one of the great projects of the Peruvian national team. However, he was never able to establish himself neither in Universitario de Deportes, nor in Alianza Lima, much less abroad...

Alexi Gómez, today at 29 years old, was a hurricane of talent that ended up being ravaged by a whirlwind of scandals and off-field situations. A left-back with prodigious display who also possessed a cheeky and confrontational playing style. A raw diamond that couldn't find anyone to polish him and establish himself in the clubs he played for, such as Universitario de Deportes and Alianza Lima, nor in the Peruvian national team.

Alexi Gómez became one of the Peruvian footballers with the most potential after his participation in the U-20 South American Championship in 2013. That year, he joined Universitario de Deportes after his good performances in León de Huánuco. He stayed there for two seasons before moving to Brommapojkarna in Sweden in 2015.

Missed Opportunities

However, controversy already accompanied him at the cream-colored club. In his first season, he was once "benched" in a previous match for arriving late to a training session and even made headlines on a TV show when he was caught leaving a nightclub with several girls and another footballer.

He also caused a scandal at the club in Ate for allegedly bringing a woman into the concentration hotel, when Óscar Ibáñez was already the coach, who separated him from the team. The matter ended up in legal actions and even a 60% reduction in his salary.

His time in Sweden was brief. He then moved to San Luis de Quillota in Chile, where his coach turned against him due to off-field issues. "It is a serious offense, the fact of coming to a training session with alcohol breath, even more so, after having lost the Santiago Wanderers match hours earlier. It is an offense to the institution, to the teammates, and coaching staff," said coach Miguel Ramírez in 2015 about Alexi Gómez.

In 2018, he joined Atlas in Mexico, but a video of him playing a pick-up game before a crucial match led to his dismissal. He later had unsuccessful spells in the MLS and Argentina, until 2019 when he returned to Peru, this time to Melgar.

His Last Chance

Without a performance that justified his signing, he arrived in 2020 as one of the big signings of Alianza Lima, a club where he faced scandal after scandal during the pandemic, being part of the club's sporting relegation before ending his contract.

After his failure at Alianza Lima and with closed doors at Universitario de Deportes and the Peruvian national team, the full-back landed at UTC de Cajamarca in 2021, where he scored 2 goals in 20 matches. In 2022, already far from the orbit of the main clubs and completely discarded from the national team, Alexi Gómez played for Deportivo Llacuabamba in the Second Division (Liga 2), but the club finished tenth and failed to achieve promotion.
