In 2013, a team from Lambayeque became champion of the Second Division, thus obtaining the direct spot to participate in the Decentralized Championship of the following year. This institution was Los Caimanes, also known as the 'Lacoste' team due to the resemblance between their shield and the well-known clothing brand. Likewise, they had players with extensive experience in Peruvian football, such as Luis 'Cuto' Guadalupe and Mario 'Machito' Gómez.

The northern team had a terrible campaign in the first division and lost their category after falling to Sport Huancayo in a relegation match. The following year, they were the runners-up in the second division, but it was not enough to promote.

Over time, they remained in the Peruvian Second Division and on several occasions were the main favorites to become champions; however, this never happened. After many years fighting to return to Liga 1, the Lambayeque team has a discouraging present.
