He retired from professional football in 2016, wearing the Sport Boys jersey, but his heart was always with Universitario de Deportes. Rainer Torres, a confessed fan of Universitario de Deportes, revealed on Sunday that what motivated him to retire from the field was Guillian-Barré syndrome, a disorder diagnosed in January six years ago. Torres shared the raw account of what 'Motorcito' experienced on his Facebook account.
"Few people know the real reason why I retired from football. In January 2016, I was diagnosed with Guillian-Barré syndrome, a disorder that attacks the nervous system, which is why I decided to retire. Although it didn't hit me hard, it affected 50% of my muscle strength, especially the strength of my legs. In April 2016, I felt a little better, I wanted to try to come back, and although I had offers from first division teams, I thought that playing in the second division would help me recover little by little, but it was impossible. I kept falling, with no strength in my legs, trying to hide it somehow. After two months, I decided to retire definitively. I simply couldn't," Torres said in the post.
Rainer revealed that he stopped enjoying playing football and that the times he did, it was more out of obligation than pleasure.
"I tried to play with friends, but I felt frustrated because I couldn't play well. I stopped enjoying playing football, whether it was informal matches or events or anything related to playing football. I simply stopped playing, and when I did play, it was more out of obligation than pleasure," he recounted.
In the lines of the post, Torres also expressed his gratitude to the people who supported him during this time. "I want to thank the people who care about me, who were there in those moments giving me strength and who helped me a lot in that very difficult stage of my life," he wrote.
After that testimony, Rainer Torres said that he recovered from that illness and returned to playing football, which brought him immense joy.
"Today, after many years, fully recovered, I can say that I started enjoying playing football again. I want to thank EmbajadUr for giving me this opportunity, I want to thank my teammates for helping me enjoy the game again. Thank you very much, because this feeling is UNIQUE. I didn't want to end this good week without writing these lines. Good Sunday to all!"
