Pedro Pablo 'Perico' León, historic player of the Peruvian National Team, passed away this afternoon at the age of 76. The former forward is remembered as one of the best, if not the best, number 9 in the history of the national team, so his goals are his greatest legacy in Peruvian soccer.
On August 3, 1969, Peru faced Argentina in the qualifiers for Mexico 70. The national team won the match 1-0, with the amazing goal by 'Perico' León, who broke through the Albiceleste defense and beat goalkeeper Agustín Cejas.
The national team qualified for the 1970 World Cup and was placed in Group 4 alongside West Germany, Bulgaria, and Morocco. The Peruvian National Team finished in second place in the standings with 4 points, after defeating Bulgaria 3-2, thrashing Morocco 3-0, and losing 3-1 to West Germany. In the quarter-finals, the team couldn't overcome the eventual champion of the World Cup: it lost 4-2 to Brazil.
Relive the broadcast of the match, masterfully narrated by Lucho Izusqui, with the incomparable commentary of Carlos Alfonso 'Pocho' Rospigliosi, on an afternoon when the Peruvian National Team snatched a draw from the Albiceleste.
