The health crisis left many compatriots stranded in different countries. The unexpected closure of air and land borders to Peru, decreed by President Martín Vizcarra in the face of the spread of the coronavirus, left many far from home.

Thanks to community flights, many Peruvians were reunited with their loved ones, including five representatives from the national wrestling delegation that participated in the Pan American and Pre-Olympic Wrestling Championship 2020, held in Canada.

The athletes who managed to return home were Yanet Sovero, Thalía Mallqui, Sixto Auccapiña, Pool Ambrocio, and coach Juan Osco.

Pool Ambrocio qualified for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games in the 86 kg division. Meanwhile, Yanet Sovero won the title of Pan American champion in the 72 kg division.

There is still pending the transfer of a group from the delegation that remains in Canada. This group includes Gonzalo Soto, Abel Herrera, José Pastor, Daniel Cusing, and Nilton Soto, who are awaiting new flights to return to the country. For the moment, the Peruvian consulate is providing accommodation for the athletes.
