Mauricio Montes, center forward of the Peruvian U-23 national team that was eliminated from the semifinals of the Lima 2019 Pan American Games, spoke about the difficult moment that the 'Bicolor' is going through after the defeat suffered against Jamaica last Sunday.
"We did not expect this result against Jamaica. We would have liked to qualify for the semifinals, but unfortunately it turned out this way and tomorrow (Wednesday, August 7) we have to play a good match," said Mauricio Montes after Tuesday's training.
On the other hand, he highlighted the little preparation time that Nolberto Solano's team had for the start of the tournament: "We did not have much time to work, but this is not an excuse. We did not know how to take advantage of the opportunity we had last Sunday, which was a match that would have qualified us for the semifinals," added the forward.
The next opponent is Ecuador, whom the Peruvian national team defeated 1-0 prior to the start of Lima 2019. "They did not do well either, but they have a good team. Before the championship, we had a friendly match, which we won, and we know something about them. We will try to get a good result," added the forward about the Ecuadorians.
Finally, he left a message for his teammates in the Peruvian U-23 national team: "We have to keep working because this does not end here. They have a career ahead of them; this was a bad step, but they have to keep going," Montes concluded.
