Peruvian national team defeats Brazil in the Copa América Centenario

On June 12, 2016, fans of the Peruvian national team were eagerly awaiting the match against the always difficult Brazilian national team in the Copa América Centenario. Ricardo Gareca's team had to win the three points or they would say goodbye to the special tournament that CONMEBOL had organized to commemorate the 100 years of the Copa América.

The match was developing quite slowly and with only 30 minutes left of the game, a deep pass from Christian Ramos to the Peruvian attack reached Paolo Guerrero's body, initiating a quick play with Andy Polo, who at that moment was advancing more and more towards the area on the right side until he finally crosses the ball to Raúl Ruidiaz.

The play was quite fast and 'La Pulga' (Ruidiaz) had no other way to score the goal that secured their spot in the quarterfinals than with his hand. The celebrations were immediate and Trauco, Cueva, and Guerrero went to celebrate the tremendous result with Ruidiaz. However, the Argentine referee, Patricio Lostau, stopped the game for nearly 4 minutes, ultimately allowing the long-awaited goal for Peru.

Up until that day, Peru had not defeated Brazil since 1975, and although the goal was criticized worldwide, the Peruvian national team finished as the leader of its group and faced Colombia in the quarterfinals, where their participation in the tournament would come to an end.
