Controversy Surrounding Argentina's Victory over Peru in the 1978 World Cup
Argentina's six-nil victory over Peru in the 1978 World Cup is still causing controversy. José Velásquez, a former player of the Peruvian national team at that time, claimed that six players met with Marcos Calderón the day before the match against Argentina to ensure Quiroga wasn't benched.
Velásquez singled out Muñante as one of the players who did not perform to their full potential. In response to the accusation, Juan José Muñante defended himself saying, "Ask around the U, ask around the Boys, who is Muñante. No, I won't speak to that filth," referring to Velásquez's comments.
The situation has worsened as Germán Leguía stated that Brazil was willing to pay for Peru not to concede more than three goals against Argentina, allowing Brazil to secure a place in the final.
On another note, Benavente is preparing for the World Cup and hopes to be selected by Gareca to be part of the starting eleven. Moreover, he is being monitored by Wolfsburg in Germany due to his outstanding performances for his current club, Royal Charleroi from Belgium.
