A former leader of Peruvian football was acquitted on Tuesday of corruption charges in a trial in the United States stemming from the scandal over bribes in FIFA. Two other South American leaders were convicted last week.
The jury said on Friday that it was deadlocked on the charge of conspiracy against Manuel Burga. The judge gave them a rest over the long Christmas weekend. Jurors agreed on the verdict of innocence on Tuesday shortly after resuming deliberations.
Brazilian Jose Maria Marin and Paraguayan Juan Ángel Napout were found guilty of most charges, although acquitted of lesser accusations.
The three, arrested in 2015, were accused of accepting millions of dollars in bribes from marketing companies seeking commercial rights to major football tournaments. (D)
