Peruvian David Torrence fails to make it to the semifinals of the 1,500 meters at the London-2017 World Championships

Peruvian David Torrence, 31, who first competed for the United States and has been competing for Peru since July 2016, finished ninth in his first-round heat with a time of 3:46.39. He was not able to advance to the semifinals based on times. The top six from each of the three heats, plus the next six fastest times, advanced to the semifinals.

In the race in which David Torrence finished ninth, Kenyan runner Elijah Motonei Manangoi (3:45.93), the runner-up at the 2015 World Championships in Beijing, emerged as the winner. Manangoi, one of the favorites, was unable to shine at the 2016 Rio Olympics due to an injury.

David Torrence, born in Japan, finished far from his country's record (3:34.67), which he set earlier this year at the Diamond League meeting in Oslo, where he placed fifth.

David Torrence qualified for the next round based on times, finishing 32nd out of 42 athletes who competed in the first round. This was his second major event representing Peru, after being a finalist in the 5,000 meters at the 2016 Rio Olympics, where he finished in 15th place.

In the 2015 Pan American Games, representing the United States, David Torrence finished second in the 5,000 meters.
